Chameleon Fibre, a new online fibre comparison tool has been launched in South Africa. The tool enables users to gain access to a list of product packages available in their fibre-live areas.

With the Chameleon Fibre platform, consumers now have a tool that informs them whether they are in fact in a live area and presents them with ISP products. Once the customer has made a decision regarding a product package, they can order directly from the website. The tool opens up a new market of products and services to those who need it.

Solving a confusing industry with just a few clicks
The new online platform – Chameleon Fibre – will be available for free to South Africans. This fibre comparison site aims to demystify the fibre market and assists users to purchase the right fibre solution for their home.

Customised information is at the core of the Chameleon Fibre website. Even before one enters the website, a visitor is presented with four user categories: Home, Small Business, Streaming, and Fibre-to-the-business (FTTB).

Once the relevant selection has been made, the user is taken to the appropriate homepage. By entering a physical address and tailoring results in terms of data, network, and ISP requirements, the relevant fibre packages and solutions from leading brands are displayed. Despite the fact that this is a new platform, big industry players are already participating, including MWEB, iConnect, Vodacom, and VOX.

More and more South Africans are turning to subscription video on demand (SVOD) services, such as ShowMax and Netflix, for their entertainment. Predictions are that by 2020, video will account for 71% of all data consumption.

Consequently, the demand for fast and stable bandwidth solutions is rapidly rising. Factors such as customer demand, new technology, and even economic incentives have made fibre one of the fastest growing sectors in South Africa and Africa. Andile Ngcaba, President of the FTTH Council Africa, says that Industrial Internet, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data are driven by optics, as well as the foundation of platform economics. “Today the application of fibre optics go beyond traditional broadband connectivity,” he states, “and the relationship between GDP growth and broadband cannot be over-emphasized.”

Unfortunately, despite the demand from consumers and dedication from the government to create this information highway, many South Africans are still in the dark about fibre. Dean Ormsby, Chameleon Bespoke’s General Manager, says that the reason for this is that the current fibre market is unbelievably confusing. “Some customers don’t even know that they are in a fibre-live area. If they do, they are often overwhelmed by the complexity of choice between the various infrastructure providers and Internet Service Provider (ISP) packages on offer.”
