SqwidNet, the licensed Sigfox IoT network operator in South Africa is the Diamond Sponsor for the second iteration of the IOT Forum Africa 2018 (#IOTFA2018), scheduled on 14 – 15 March 2018. This conference is targeted at thought leaders, IoT ecosystem participants and experts in South Africa, and will create a platform for all players to share their knowledge of real-world IoT trends, challenges and solutions. All participants will get the opportunity to engage with each other to understand how their digital transformation journeys could be complimented by the Internet of Things.

Being a provider of and ultra-narrowband IoT network in South Africa, SqwidNet is dedicated to facilitating the growth of IoT on the continent. According to Reshaad Sha, CEO SqwidNet, “Digital transformation journeys can have an impact across a number of industry verticals in every city or town on the African continent. Many developing economies see digital transformation as a means to leapfrog some of the technological challenges that they have been facing,” says Sha.

Thanks to the cost-effective, production at scale of high-tech sensors, IoT technology is being applied to many industry verticals, be it agriculture, conservation, logistics, security and utilities. One real-world application of IoT is being used currently by Sigfox, where the company is using connected sensors to assist conservationists in better monitoring rhino populations in certain parts on the African continent and to assist with the combatting of rhino poaching.

SqwidNet is happy to be partnering for the second time with IT News Africa in their attempt to encourage more IoT conversations and ultimately highlighting the untapped potential of this technology. “We will be using it as an event to engage other industry participants to see how we could work with them to impact digital transformation journeys that they are undertaking for their customers,” says Sha.

Sigfox, a global IoT network, has established an ecosystem reaching 45 countries, covering 803 million people and 3.8 million square kms of coverage. Through SqwidNet, the network currently reaches 81% of the population in South Africa. Our proposition comprises low-cost, long-range, low-power and ultra-narrowband modules and devices that serve up IoT data in a secure and cost-efficient manner to application and service providers.
